Location
India is completely located in the Northern Hemisphere. The Indian mainland is located between latitudes 8°4'N and 37°6'N, and longitudes 68°7'E and 97°25'E. The Tropic of Cancer (23°30'N) divides India almost evenly.

Siachen Glacier is located near Indira Col, India’s northernmost point under Indian administration. Indira Point on Nicobar Island is India’s southernmost point.

Size
With a total area of 3.28 million square kilometres, India accounts for 2.4% of the world’s total geographical area. India is the world’s seventh largest country, with a land boundary of approximately 15,200 km and a total coastline length of 7,516.6 km. The east-west extent of India appears to be less than the north-south extent.

India and The World

The Indian subcontinent is situated between West and East Asia.

The protruding Deccan Peninsula of India aided India in establishing close contacts with West Asia, Africa, and Europe, as well as South-East and East Asia. India’s land contacts with the rest of the world far outnumber its maritime contacts.

India has made significant contributions to the world in the form of ideas, philosophies (Upanishads, Ramayana, Panchtantra), and mathematics (Indian numerals and decimal system, algebra, trigonometry and calculus).

In exchange, Greek sculpture and West Asian architectural styles influenced Indian architecture.

India’s Neighbours

India is a major player in South Asia, with 29 states and 7 union territories. India shares borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Bhutan. The Maldives and Sri Lanka are the two island countries to the south across the sea. India is distinct from the rest of Asia and is known as a subcontinent.
